Our
life is consist of different stages namely infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age. We
all encounter these stages and face variety of problems in different
situations. old age is the problematic
stage and it is unavoidable. National Elderly Policy defines person of 60+ age
group as elderly.
Different types of problems
Social problems
Elder Neglect
It refers to the failure of a family members to meet the medical, social, and psychological needs of an older person who requires help.
Disillusionment
Elders feel lost, confused, and disconnected
from their social environments. Feeling of powerlessness,
loneliness, uselessness and isolation in old age.
Generation gap
generation gap often refers to a perceived gap
between younger people and older persons in adapting to the modern world.
Economic problems
Retirement and dependence
Elders have to dependent on their child for basic necessity,
medical expenses. They also face difficulties in rising their families , inadequate nutrition, lack of access to transportation,
diminished savings and job loss.
Health problems
Health problems like deafness, blindness, locomotors and
disabilities are generally predominant.
The major personality disorder is Psychosis
which includes agitation, hallucination, slurred speech, mood swings,
uncooperative behaviour, agitation and dementia
Mild mental disorder is Neurosis in which elders feel Irritated, Angry, Sad,
Guilty, Worried, Hostile, Self-consciousness and Vulnerable.
Care for elderly persons
Elders have simple expectations to live a
life with good health, dignity, economic independence and finally a peaceful
death. They look for care, love and affection. Being concerned about their needs,
will ensure their good health and supporting emotionally will keep them jovial,
which is the ideal way to live a healthy life. However, many of us were finding difficulty to provide care
and attention to elders due to work and some other priorities.
